When it comes to conversations about racial reconciliation, the Church should be at the forefront. Because we have the Holy Spirit, we have a unique power to break the hold that racism has on our society and in our world.

And as we do that, we want to make sure that we’re framing the conversation in the most helpful way possible. So we need to choose our terms carefully. When it comes to a term like white privilege, there is no shortage of controversy. Is it a term we should be using? Is it a concept that’s helpful in furthering racial reconciliation?

Our opinion is “yes” to both of those questions. On this episode, we discuss and explore why that we believe that to be the case.

Believe it or not, the bible actually has a lot to say about privilege, so we want to take a look at white privilege not only from a sociological perspective, but also a theological one.

QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE

Unfortunately, even in seminary, almost all of the theologians we read about and looked up to ended up being white. Other voices were muted or ignored. Click To Tweet White supremacy isn't just about white hoods and burning crosses. It's about the assumption that white culture is normative. Click To Tweet Unfortunately, much of the missionary work that happened in the 18th and 19th centuries also brought with it an ethic of cultural imperialism and white supremacy laced within it. Click To Tweet For Jesus to make a Samaritan the hero of story was highly subversive to the privilege of the Jewish people. Click To Tweet This issue runs deep into our society systems, and honestly it's very disturbing and distressing. Click To Tweet
